RN to BSN Program for Working Nurses

As a working nurse who does not yet have a bachelor’s degree (BSN), you may wonder if earning one is realistic, given your existing personal and professional obligations. However, many online RN to BSN programs give nurses like you the flexibility you need to earn a degree without sacrificing your job.

Earning a BSN can expand your career options by preparing you for professional nursing practice in multiple healthcare settings. A bachelor’s degree can also give you the knowledge, skills and credentials you need to move into management and leadership roles.

Is An Online Program Right For You?

The benefits of online learning include the following:

  • You set the pace. Most online programs allow you to complete coursework at your convenience, and multiple terms per year allow you to take classes when it makes sense.
  • No fixed class locations. This also means you can enroll in a program beyond your geographical location.
  • Online networking with nurses from around the country. You can benefit from the practical experience and knowledge of colleagues with experience in different practice settings.

The time commitment for earning a degree depends on the RN to BSN program you choose. You can complete some programs, such as the one offered by Lamar University, in as few as 13 months.

Despite the advantages of an online program, it is important to be honest with yourself about your needs and the self-discipline online study requires. Two big challenges online students face are finding dedicated quiet time to study and staying motivated. Answering these simple questions will let you know if you have what it takes:

  • Do you need the face-to-face interaction of a traditional classroom setting?
  • Do you have the commitment and drive to complete an online program?

Choosing an Online Nursing Program

Online RN to BSN programs come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Here are some questions to ask as you evaluate programs:

  • Does the program offer classes in your area of interest?
  • What are the qualifications of the faculty?
  • What do the classes include? (i.e. pre-recorded learning modules, streaming lectures, online textbooks etc.?)
  • How can you communicate with the instructors?
  • How long can you take to complete the program?
  • Is the curriculum on a fixed schedule?
  • Is the program nationally accredited?
  • What are the clinical requirements?
  • What is the cost?
  • Is financial aid available?

Completing an RN to BSN program can open up more job opportunities, improve your critical thinking skills and bolster your self-confidence. Take the time and do the research to decide which nursing program is best for you.
