Certification
Certification Requirements
You must have:
- A conferred master's degree. Degrees are conferred at graduation and posted to your transcript the following Monday. At this time the Certification Officer may begin recommending your certification with SBEC.
- Passed the TExES exam. To be approved to take the TExES, you must have:
- Taken and passed the LCE (Lamar Competency Exam) with 80% or greater. To register to take the LCE, please contact sandy.rucker@lamar.edu or academic.testing@lamar.edu. You will be registered and sent information on how to access this testing.
- Taken and supplied a certificate of completion for ILD (Instructional Leadership Development) to sandy.rucker@lamar.edu along with a copy of the TExES application.
- Initial Teaching Certification.
- 2 years of teaching experience. You must send your service record with application. Ask for a copy of your service record from your HR department for certification purposes. Substitute teaching does not count towards this 2 years of teaching according to TEA.

- Apply for Recommendation for a Standard Certificate with Lamar's Certification Office.

Certification Application (.PDF)- We must receive an application by email with your electronic signature requesting the review to begin your recommendation process.
- Reviewing the documents for recommendation may take up to 8 weeks.
- The first document reviewed is your transcript. Your degree will be posted in the LU electronic records Monday following commencement. This is the first date we can process your application for recommendation.
- Apply for Certification with SBEC and pay the required fees through the SBEC website. See instructions on how to apply in the Detailed application instructions (PDF) above.
- When the Lamar certification review is completed, the recommendation will be entered on your SBEC application. It takes another 6-8 working days for SBEC to process the request.
Note: SBEC cannot process a request for certification until the recommendation is received from the preparation program (Lamar).
