Career Highlights:

I’m the Director of Nursing Research for the JoAnne Gay Dishman School of Nursing at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas. I have been Chair of the Texas Board of Nursing Advisory Committee on Education and was Vice Chair of the Kansas State Board of Nursing. I served on the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board’s Advisory Committee on RN Education and was previously the President of the Texas Association of Deans and Directors of Professional Nursing Programs and served as President of the Society for Modeling and Role-Modeling. I’m a clinical nurse specialist in community health nursing and received awards in teaching and research, including Sigma Theta Tau International’s Dissertation Award for Region 2. I’ve received national and state grant funding to conduct research in several areas: high fidelity simulations in nursing education, seamless articulation for RN to BSN students, disaster preparedness, response and recovery and student retention and diversity. Hope and older adults are additional research areas of interest.

    MSNC 5311: Nursing Research, MSNE 5254: Nursing Education Practicum I and MSNE 5255: Nursing Education Practicum II.

  • Why did you start teaching?

    In providing nursing care to patients, I can work with a limited number of patients each day. In teaching students how to become nurses, I can have a greater impact on patients who the students will care for in the future.

  • What’s the best advice you ever received?

    Think positive and make your own assessments of situations.

  • What's the best advice that you could give your students?

    Learning takes time to think and reflect on what one reads.

  • What is the one book you think everyone should read?

    “Who Moved My Cheese?” by Dr. Spencer Johnson.

  • What qualities make someone particularly successful in the area in which you teach?

    For the Nursing Research course, think about questions you have in your daily nursing practice.

  • What do you think is the biggest challenge that people in the profession face today?

    Limited time with patients is the major challenge.

  • Tell us something your students may not know about you:

    I had the opportunity to chair an Accreditation and Approval of Nursing Education Programs Sub-committee for the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN). This led to two national research projects and two position statements approved by the NCSBN Delegate Assembly. State Boards of Nursing across the USA implemented the two position statements.
