With a core curriculum based in research, assessment and content specific to the ASD student, you will understand how the needs and capabilities of these types of students differ from those developing normally and how best to guide them in their learning process. You will also gain knowledge in behavioral assessment and data analysis to help you guide students' educational teams in their evaluation and assessment of progress both academically and behaviorally.

SPED 5361 Survey of Exceptional Learners

General survey of the learning potentials of those children deficient in basic integrities which can be categorized into central peripheral nervous system dysfunction and/or behavioral disorder. Prerequisites: Admission to the Graduate School or Post-Baccalaureate educator preparation program.

Identification of skill deficiencies, modification of curriculum, designing and implementation of instructional strategies for pupils evidencing disabilities in reading and language arts.

This course is designed to provide concepts and procedures incorporating reading instructional techniques effectively in the content areas. Emphasis on current teaching practices within the content area classroom.

History and systems of learning which have application to the classroom. Current theories and research in pedagogy.

This course provides teachers a foundation to understand the legal, ethical, and policy dimensions of education. Special emphasis is given to the interpretation of case law, Texas Education Code, and federal and state statutes.

A study of development and nature of the human personality. Emphasis on psychological and biological experiments.

Analysis and evaluation; types of test and measurement devices will be conducted. Methods of determining the reliability and validity of tests are investigated. Designs for testing programs and selection of appropriate tests will be included. Evaluation systems of individuals and programs will be discussed.

This course introduces teachers to the design, methodologies, and techniques necessary to understand educational research and to use “scientifically-based research” in making informed decisions which can positively impact student achievement. An emphasis is placed on action research.

SPED 5370 Introduction to Autism Spectrum Disorders

This course will include an overview of autism spectrum disorders including definitions, processes, principles and concepts specific to the autism spectrum. Classification systems, models of assessment and intervention strategies related to individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) will be explored. Special emphasis will be given to ethical practice and evidence-based practice.

SPED 5371 Autism and Applied Behavior Analysis

This course will provide foundational knowledge in applied behavior analysis (ABA) including the principles of behavioral intervention. Application of ABA principles in EC-12 settings, clinics and home environments will be covered. Special emphasis will be given to ethical practice and evidence-based practice (e.g., discrete trial training, analysis of verbal behavior and direct instruction).

SPED 5372 Models of Behavioral Intervention

This course will provide an in-depth exploration of behavioral interventions in EC-12 settings, clinics and home environments. Research related to models of behavioral intervention will be analyzed. The selection of ethical, behavioral intervention and outcome strategies will be emphasized.

This course will provide an in-depth exploration of methods and models of behavioral assessment from initial screening to assessment of treatment outcomes. An emphasis will be placed on analyzing behavioral data and applying data to the intervention process. Ethical principles of assessment and intervention will be reviewed.
