I Got the Job!

By Stephanie Grissett

In two short months, I will officially be a school counselor for Austin ISD! I’m shocked, nervous, excited, and everything else in between. At first, I'd thought what if I couldn’t get the job? How would I get my practicum and internship hours? Was this really going to work? I was calm and collected on the outside, but frantic and panicked underneath.

So how did I get the job? Through networking and building relationships with my school counselor, people I’d met at previous professional developments, and by using LinkedIn. I called and emailed everyone I knew in the field until I got a hit. Even then, there were no guarantees. I still had to make business cards, portfolios, update my resume, and make sure I had great, not just good but great, references. I went into each interview with passion and authenticity. I was also prepared to hear the word “no.” That way I wasn’t stuck; I already had a plan B, a plan C, and a plan D. I wasn’t going to stop until I got the job. Thankfully, I didn’t have to get to plan C, but some of you will.

I want to encourage all of you going into the last stretch of your program to remain encouraged. We’re entering a very competitive field where everyone has the credentials and training. So how do you stand out? By having great relationships and a genuine passion for being a counselor. Good luck to all of you and don’t give up!

We Can’t Do This Alone!

Its summer time and all I want to do is lay on someone’s beach and not have to think about discussion posts. But alas, there is no rest for the weary, especially when in less than one month I’ll be beginning my new school counseling position at Sims Elementary.
