BS in Communication with a Concentration in Communication Studies

    • Which classes do you teach online?

      Film Appreciation and American Cinema

    • Why did you start teaching?

I never wanted to leave higher education. I love sharing the topics I have passion for and discussing film and art with my students. I learn just as much from them and the challenges I face reaching them, so I believe I’m always a student.

    • What's the best advice that you could give your students?

You get out of education what you put into it. Believe in yourself and don't be ashamed if you don't know something. Don't be afraid to ask questions—only be ashamed if you pretend to know something you don't.

    • What qualities make someone particularly successful at filmmaking?

Passion for artistry and a willingness to learn and understand.

    • What do you think is the biggest challenge that people in filmmaking face today?

Staying up to date with technology, but also the importance of technique and storytelling. Too often, people lose themselves in what technology can do and substitute flashy effects in place of a timeless story and strong, experienced actors.

    • What is the one book you think everyone should read?

For filmmakers, it would be “Hitchcock” by Francois Truffaut; for everyone else, it would be “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee.
