I started teaching because I want to make a difference in the nursing profession and encourage future nurses to “be the change.”

  • What is the best advice that you have ever received?

We are all different types of thinkers. Some are fast and great at multitasking while others are methodical processers who look at the big picture. The world needs both. Understand how you are made and embrace it.

  • What is the best advice that you could give your students?

What is the best advice that you could give your students? Nursing is a giving and caring profession. It’s essential that you fill yourself up and care for yourself as you care for others because it’s impossible to pour from an empty vessel.

  • What is the one book you think everyone should read?

“Boundaries” by Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend.

  • What qualities make someone particularly successful in nursing?

Caring, the ability to look at multiple sides of an issue, critical thinking, good clinical judgment, diplomacy, assertiveness, active inquiry and listening to patients and families.

  • What do you think is the biggest challenge that people in nursing face today?

We have more than ever to do in less time. The challenge is to use the art of nursing so that your patient feels you have all the time in the world for them, all the while being efficient, thoroughly analyzing data and making good clinical judgments.

  • How do you see online learning affecting the future of education?

The online environment is helping to connect people. We are learning how to create real connections even when we cannot be in the same room together. Even students who attend classes on campus will have online options in order to create flexibility, promote innovation and prepare students for the technology which awaits them in the work environment upon graduation.
