  • In which online Lamar degree program(s) do you teach?

Master of Education in Special Education

  • What do your students in these courses learn?

My teaching assignment varies, but I have taught: SPED 5302: Tests, Measurement, and Evaluation SPED 5303: Educational Psychology SPED 5305: Research in Special Education. Overall, students gain the knowledge and research-based skills that special educators must master to be effective in the classroom in my courses.

  • Why did you start teaching?

I am the daughter of a public school special education teacher, so I believe that I inherited the gift of teaching. I was also inspired by the wonderful educators that taught me. In high school, I realized that my classmates were coming to me for help with various concepts. Since that time, I've invested in my own professional development to further develop that skill and passion.

  • What advice would you give those considering your online program(s)?

Realize that an online program is not a "watered down" version of a face-to-face program. Oftentimes, it takes more discipline, self-accountability, and organization than a face-to-face program. However, it affords you the opportunity to accomplish your goals without moving, leaving work, etc. Schedule time to read, study, and engage with the course material. I've always believed that "if it's not written, it's not real." Therefore, get a planner (paper/digital/or both) and plan the day so that they day won't plan you!

  • What do you think is the biggest challenge that people in the profession face today?

The ability to be agile and flexible. Our situations can change instantly. We have to anticipate change, prepare for it, and be agile and flexible enough to adapt in order to maximize the best outcomes for our students.

  • What is the one book you think everyone should read?

"The 5 Second Rule" by Mel Robbins

  • Tell us something interesting about yourself that your students might not know.

I really enjoy hiking, all things planner related, and community service. I'm also a Sunday School teacher!
