  • How did you hear about the online degree programs at Lamar University?

My friend was also in the program.

  • How has this degree affected your professional outlook? What about personally?

The degree made it possible for me to explore higher level job opportunities both inside and outside my current school district. It provided training in a wide range of skills, making me more marketable. I enjoyed working alongside administrators in my school district through my coursework. It gave me a better insight into what takes place at the administrative level. Another benefit was the ability for those mentoring me to get to know me better and become more familiar with my work and abilities. The connections I made through the process of completing my coursework have become very valuable as I continue to pursue administrative opportunities.

  • What was your single biggest takeaway from the program?

The connections I made! This included my Lamar professors, fellow classmates, and on-site mentors within my school district as we worked together. I made personal friends as well as professional ones. Even though the degree was obtained online, I felt very close to my professors and classmates just as I would had we been in a physical classroom together. The collaboration between all of us was truly amazing!

  • How much time per week did you spend on your studies?

It depended on the class, but usually about 10-15 hours a week.

  • Describe how having an online option made a degree more accessible for you.

I work full time and had two teenagers who were very involved in school activities. Our family schedule was always changing based on the kids. I refused to miss out on anything my kids were involved in for me to further my education. I did not want to sacrifice "being a mom" for obtaining my degree. The online program allowed me to work around my busy schedule and fit in study time as it was convenient for me and my family.

  • What was one of the biggest challenges during the program, and how did you overcome it?

Sometimes the technology component of it was a bit of a challenge. Occasionally the lessons would not submit as smoothly as they should, but the professors were very accommodating and understanding as long as I was in constant communication with them. They were always very helpful and were willing to work with me to overcome the problem.

TK20 was a nightmare. I never did "overcome" that one. The folks at TK20 would have to walk me through the steps every single time.

  • Why did you choose to earn your advanced degree from Lamar University?

I knew several people who had obtained their degree from Lamar and all of them had good experiences and recommended it to me.

  • What advice would you give to a prospective student who is considering this program?

I would highly recommend the program to anyone interested in furthering their education. The professors are knowledgeable, genuine, caring people who want their students to succeed. The learning environment was very warm and friendly. They held the expectations of the students at high levels, but were willing to help in any way. The coursework was useful and practical.

  • What helped you get through the program the most? What helped you make it to the finish line?

My family supporting me was the first step. After that, I made online friends who were classmates immediately upon the first class. We would do projects together, call/text/email each other for assistance or advice. We even had our own class Facebook page where we could offer advice and support to one another. The Facebook page was a HUGE help. Putting our heads together and bouncing ideas off one another as we traveled through our journey, created a bond that I still keep with people who will likely be friends of mine forever.

  • Describe your family's thoughts and feelings about you earning your degree.

My family was completely supportive of me pursuing my master's degree. They all pitched in to help with chores around the house and running errands so I could study or keep online chat appointments. It was truly a labor of love for the whole family, but they were my cheerleaders all the way! I couldn't have done it without their help

  • If you could do it all over again, what would you do differently?

I would have done it much sooner! The nerves I had about working everything in around my busy schedule was not near as bad as I had imagined it!

**This is not something I would do differently, but some advice I would give: GO TO GRADUATION AND WALK THAT STAGE! You earned it and Lamar makes you feel like a VIP on graduation day! It was a lot of fun!
