  • Master's Degree

University Admission Requirements

  • Online Application & Fee: University requirements will be assessed by the online application through ApplyTexas.org. There is a one-time application fee of $25.
  • Transcripts: Official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended*
  • Master's degree: A master’s degree from any academic area/discipline that requires an initial teacher certification is required. Conferred master’s degree GPAs will be used for admission purposes.
  • U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident

Waivers of any experience or certification requirements will be initiated by Lamar University Admissions staff as necessary in instances where they may not apply, such as applications from states that do not require certification for licensure.

Department of Educational Leadership Admission Requirements

In addition to University admission requirements, the Department of Educational Leadership requires the following for admission to the department program. Instructions for the department application and reference will be e-mailed to you after your ApplyTexas application is processed. Instructions for submitting additional documents will be e-mailed separately if you are accepted to the program.

Applicants for Superintendent Certification must meet the following criteria:

  • Master's Degree
  • Department Application with essay responses
  • Teaching Experience: Must have two years of teaching experience in public or accredited private schools and a Texas teaching certificate
  • Administrative Experience: Must have one year administrative experience (copy of service record)
  • Certification: Must hold a valid Principal or Mid-Management certificate
  • Reference from your Superintendent

*All applicants must submit official, sealed transcripts from each institution attended to the Admissions Office. All degrees must be from a regionally accredited institution. Lamar University Office of Admissions will no longer require community college transcripts for graduate applicants. Official transcripts from all other institutions will be required. However, if a department or program wishes to review a community college transcript for decision purposes, the department or program may directly request the applicant to submit the official community college transcript(s) to the Office of Admissions for processing.

Many programs may lead to licensure or certification in other states, but additional coursework or other requirements may be required by your state. Please review this chart for guidance regarding whether a Lamar University program will meet educational requirements in your state. Advance your knowledge in these superintendent education online classes

Students are required to complete 18 hours of coursework in the Program Certificate in Superintendent Education online program. Course content is aligned with the SBEC Superintendent Competencies. Courses are offered on a rotational basis.

The School Finance course is a study of Texas school finance issues and challenges associated with the superintendent’s position. Course content includes school district budgeting practices, accountability systems, audit reports and practices, funding formulas, ethical standards, and administration of funds.

Educational Facilities Planning provides contemporary information for the school superintendent on facilities planning, student safety, funding, energy management, new construction and renovation, and the relationship of appropriate facilities to student performance. Texas Education Agency facility guidelines and National Clearinghouse for Educational Facilities information are incorporated into course content.

The School Superintendent describes the roles and responsibilities of the school district superintendent with emphasis on five major topics. These topics are: Building Community Partnerships, Leading School Districts during Change, Demonstrating Ethical Leadership and Building Relationships, The Superintendent as Instructional Leader, and The Superintendent as CEO. Course content will introduce knowledge and skills necessary to being a successful superintendent.

Seminar in School Administration is a course that emphasizes the study of concepts and principles of school district administration as applied to selected topics and current challenges associated with the school superintendent.

The Superintendent Internship/Practicum provides the opportunity to integrate current, relevant, research with best practices for successful school district leadership. A site supervisor and Lamar University faculty member will guide the program participant through course activities and requirements.

The Superintendent Internship/Practicum is a continuation of your internship/practicum requirements and activities that include the completion of the Internship Plan, Professional Development Plan, and Electronic Portfolio. Your site supervisor and Lamar University faculty member will guide your progress and development.
