The M.Ed. Teacher Leadership – Specialization in ESL online program introduces teachers to the design, methodologies and techniques of scientifically based educational research in making informed decisions that positively impact student achievement, with particular emphasis on serving the needs of students with a primary language other than English.
You will learn how to support student learning by building key relationships with school community stakeholders including students, teachers, faculty, parents and the community at large. You will also gain insight into the educational needs of English language learners and learn how to develop instructional programs to assist, instruct and support these learners, including the socio-cultural factors that affect their learning and aid in their transition to U.S. schools.

The Master of Education in Teacher Leadership with a Specialization in ESL online program has specific requirements that applicants must meet to enroll. Please read the admission guidelines to ensure you qualify.
Admission Requirements:
- Online Application
- Minimum 2.5 Undergraduate GPA
University Admission Requirements
- Complete online application and pay an application fee of $25.
- Official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended*
- Conferred degree GPAs will be used for admission purposes. Applicants with a GPA below 2.5 in the conferred bachelor’s degree will be denied admission. Applicants with a conferred master’s degree with a 3.0 GPA and above will be accepted.
- U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
Waivers of any experience or certification requirements will be initiated by Lamar University Admissions staff as necessary in instances where they may not apply, such as applications from states that do not require certification for licensure.
Department of Educational Leadership Admission Requirements
The Department of Educational Leadership requires the following for admission to the department program.
M.Ed. in Teacher Leadership with a Specialization in ESL does not provide credentials for teacher education or English as a second language certification. This is not a certification program. There is no supervised practicum course. It is degree only.
Out-of-state applicants must determine whether the program will meet their state credentialing requirements by contacting their state’s Dept. of Education.
**Please note that out-of-state students may not be required to meet this criteria.
***Not applicable to out-of-state students unless taking the TExES Principal Exam.

*All applicants must submit official transcript(s) indicating: 1) The conferred bachelor's or master's degree as required for the program of application from a regionally accredited US institution or its equivalent. 2) The transcript of the most recent attendance if it differs from the institution of the conferred degree. This requirement applies regardless of the length of time in attendance and regardless of whether credit was earned or is desired. However, if a department or program wishes to review additional transcripts from prior attendance for decision purposes, the department or program may directly request the applicant to submit the official transcript(s) to the Office of Admissions for processing. Students must be eligible to re-enter all colleges and universities previously attended. Failure to disclose previous college attendance is justification for revocation of acceptance and dismissal from Lamar University.
For students considering an academic program that leads to professional licensure in a state outside of Texas, such as Clinical Mental Health Counseling, School Counseling, Educational Diagnostician, Principal Certificate or Superintendent Certificate, please contact applicable licensure board(s) in any state you may want to pursue licensure prior to beginning the academic program in order to determine whether the program meets licensure requirements. It is the student’s responsibility to confirm program eligibility for licensure in any state outside of Texas.
Courses

Students are required to complete 36 hours of coursework as outlined in the following ESL master’s online degree plan. Participation in a specialization area may or may not lead to additional credentialing. It is the responsibility of the student to confirm the requirements for certification and/or endorsement in a specialization area.
Note: Lamar University Graduate Education Programs do not permit students to take coursework for transient credit.
