  • How has this degree affected your professional outlook? What about personally?

This principal certification has provided me with the knowledge and educational growth that I need to become an administrator in the near future.

  • What was your single biggest takeaway from the program?

My biggest takeaway was the support from the professors and Lamar's staff. I am not a test taker, however Dr. Vance Cortez-Rucker's principal certification prep course was very helpful and informative. After completing the course, I passed my test.

  • How much time per week did you spend on your studies?

Several hours daily especially when I studied for the test.

  • Describe how having an online option made a degree more accessible for you.

God has blessed me with two children and a full-time career. The online option is a blessing and allowed me to continue my educational journey. Within a few years I plan on taking the superintendent program.

  • What was one of the biggest challenges during the program, and how did you overcome it?

Time commitment. I learned to prioritize to make sure that I allowed time for my family, career and school.

  • What was one of the biggest challenges during the program, and how did you overcome it?

    Google.

  • Why did you choose to earn your advanced degree from Lamar University?

After researching various programs, Lamar University fit my educational requirements and needs.

  • What advice would you give to a prospective student who is considering this program?

Make sure the program is right for you. Allow time for your family, career and school. Make sure to take time for yourself as well – this will allow you to focus better on school.

  • What helped you get through the program the most? What helped you make it to the finish line?

Prayers, my kids, family and the school staff helped me get through the program.

  • Describe your family's thoughts and feelings about you earning your degree.

My family is a blessing. I spoke with them first before I began the program. They were very supportive and loving throughout the program. When I finished, I took them out to an upscale restaurant to show my appreciation for their support. They were/are very proud.

  • If you could do it all over again, what would you do differently?

The only thing I would do differently is not to stress about the principal certification test. As previously stated I am not a test taker and I tend to overanalyze tests. I would take my time and not stress so that I can pass it on the first try.
