Degrees Held:

  • M.A. in Communication and Leadership - Gonzaga University
  • M.Ed. in Speech and Hearing - Stephen F. Austin State University
  • B.S. in Speech and Hearing - Stephen F. Austin State University

Career Highlights:

I developed a course for students with high anxiety about public speaking [communication apprehension] and now teach that face-to-face each semester. I developed online courses in interpersonal communication and advanced public speaking. In each of these courses, I see students grow and find their voice and hone their communication abilities! I developed an online course in communicating forgiveness. Again, lives expand and change!

  • Why did you start teaching in the online program?

I supported the development of our online program because I earned one of my degrees online, and I know just how rich and rewarding an online educational experience can be. In class discussion, each student's 'voice' can be 'heard' and valued.

  • What's the best advice that you ever received from one of your professors?

Sometimes you study a topic, but you have to sit with the information a while before you can become truly conversant on that topic. Give yourself time to think and ponder. Let it all soak in. Take a break and come back. Then understanding will dawn!

  • What's the most important thing you want students to take away from your class?

You make a difference in this world with each and every interaction. You make your mark--will it be grumpy or negative, or positive and supportive? YOU make a difference!

  • What is your go-to show when you need a laugh?

My go-to series is The Big Bang Theory. There is ALWAYS a communication snafu occurring, whether semantic, pragmatic, nonverbal, or verbal! Sheldon is a prime example of how NOT to communicate so often!
