Career Highlights:
I’m the Director of Articulation RN-BSN & RN-MSN for the JoAnne Gay Dishman School of Nursing at Lamar University. I hold National Certification as a Certified Nurse Educator (CNE) and am a former Robert Wood Johnson Foundation DNP mentor. I’ve twice been a DAISY award nominee and was recently presented the second of two awards by the Texas Organization of Baccalaureate and Graduate Nursing Education (TOBGNE), one for Excellence in Research and the other for Innovation in Teaching. I’ve developed a study abroad program for the School of Nursing and led the first service-learning opportunity to study the rural healthcare needs of the people of the Dominican Republic. My research endeavors include an exploration of the experiences of nurse executives during mergers or acquisitions, an investigation of community needs after severe weather events in Southeast Texas and the effects of mindful meditation on anxiety in nursing students.
Which classes do you teach online?
Theoretical Foundations, Theories and Online Education and Leadership and Management.
Why did you start teaching?
I wanted to be an educator since I was a young girl; being able to combine nursing experience with being an educator is wonderful. I feel like I am right where I need to be.
What is the best advice that you have ever received?
“They may forget your name, but they will never forget how you made them feel.” – Maya Angelou
What is the best advice that you could give your students?
Get organized, set small attainable goals and be kind to yourself.
What is the one book you think everyone should read?
Comfortable with Uncertainty by Pema Chödrön. It is short teachings about cultivating fearlessness and compassion.
What qualities make someone particularly successful in nursing?
Compassion and intuition.
What do you think is the biggest challenge that people in nursing face today?
Clinically, time constraints are a huge challenge. It is very difficult to spend time with a patient with all of the tasks you have to do. Nurses are constantly being pulled away from the bedside to complete other tasks.
How do you see online learning affecting the future of education?
Online learning provides a more adaptable environment for those already in the workforce, with families or those who have other commitments that may hinder their ability to attend on-campus, face-to-face courses.
