Your online M.Ed. in Literacy admission checklist

The Master of Education in Literacy online program has specific requirements that applicants must meet to enroll. Please read the admission guidelines to ensure you qualify.

Admission Requirements:

  • Online Application
  • Minimum 2.5 Undergraduate GPA

University Admission Requirements

  • Online Application & Fee: Complete online application and pay a one-time application fee of $25.
  • Transcripts: Official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended*
  • Conferred degree GPAs will be used for admission purposes. Applicants with a GPA below 2.5 in the conferred bachelor’s degree will be denied admission. Applicants with a conferred master’s degree with a 3.0 GPA and above will be accepted.
  • U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident

Waivers of any experience or certification requirements will be initiated by Lamar University Admissions staff as necessary in instances where they may not apply, such as applications from states that do not require certification for licensure.

Department of Teacher Education Admission Requirements

In addition to University admission requirements, the Department of Teacher Education requires the following for admission to the department program.

  • Department application with essay responses
  • Reference from a principal or assistant principal who has supervised you
  • Valid teaching certificate.**
  • Two years teaching experience. Applicants seeking certification in Texas should request a service record with an authorized signature from their HR office.
  • Applicants seeking certification in Texas must conduct practicum/internship activities on a TEA-approved public or private school campus.***

*All applicants must submit official transcript(s) indicating: 1) The conferred bachelor's or master's degree as required for the program of application from a regionally accredited US institution or its equivalent. 2) The transcript of the most recent attendance if it differs from the institution of the conferred degree. This requirement applies regardless of the length of time in attendance and regardless of whether credit was earned or is desired. However, if a department or program wishes to review additional transcripts from prior attendance for decision purposes, the department or program may directly request the applicant to submit the official transcript(s) to the Office of Admissions for processing. Students must be eligible to re-enter all colleges and universities previously attended. Failure to disclose previous college attendance is justification for revocation of acceptance and dismissal from Lamar University.

This course provides historical and philosophical perspectives in literacy instruction. The results of research in such areas as emergent literacy, cueing systems and comprehension, reading interests, current literacy methodologies and diversity of learners in schools are examined for application in classroom practice.

This course explores theories, concepts and research-based pedagogical implications for multisensory language learning. Graduate students conceptualize and implement 'multisensory strategies' in field-based assignments which utilize direct instructional strategies involving visual, auditory and tactile-kinesthetic sensory systems to learn the phonological, morphemic, semantic and syntactic layers of language.

This course will focus on literacy development from the perspective of the second language learner. Topics will include theoretical models related to reading in a second language (L2), research on the relationship between literacy in a first language (L1) and literacy in L2, the social contexts of reading in L2 and instructional practices for second language literacy.

This course provides a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of writing development and examines current literary and pedagogical theories for urban education of reading/literature instruction, writing instruction and assessment, instructional materials, and motivational materials in the classroom.

This course introduces teachers to the design, methodologies, and techniques necessary to understand educational research and to use “scientifically-based research” in making informed decisions which can positively impact student achievement. An emphasis is placed on action research.

This course examines the connections among the psychological, sociological, cultural and political aspects of literacy, learning and teaching. Candidates continue the development of their literacy philosophies.

This course provides an opportunity for an in-depth study of current approaches to assessment as a foundation for literacy instruction and intervention design of struggling readers and writers. In supervised experiences, teachers utilize a range of formal and informal assessment tools and methods to diagnose and assess reading and writing development, design intervention and involve the learner in self-assessment.

Introduction, analysis and usage of educational research. Overview of the research process including design, methodology, ethics and proposal development.

This course is designed to prepare secondary classroom teachers and reading specialists for teaching reading to secondary school students and adult populations. Content includes characteristics of secondary students in grades 7-12 and adult learners, language patterns and structures common to various subject-area texts, and techniques to teach reading and writing strategies in secondary and adult classrooms.

This course examines the organization, development, implementation and improvement of reading and writing programs in public schools grades K through 12 at classroom, building and district levels. Because learners will examine the school's literacy program and conduct a needs assessment, learners must verify that they will have the cooperation of appropriate school administrators.

In this course, students learn techniques for diagnosis and correction of reading problems. It is an advanced course which presumes students have an introductory reading course at the graduate level. Students will learn various assessment techniques and interventions, which can be applied in the classroom with individual students or with groups of students.
