Learn how to be admitted to Lamar University’s educational diagnostician certification program
The Master of Education in Special Education with Educational Diagnostician Certification online program has specific requirements that applicants must meet to enroll. Please read the admission guidelines to ensure you qualify.
Admission Requirements:
- Online Application
- Teaching Certificate
- Minimum 2.5 Undergraduate GPA
University Admission Requirements
- Complete online application and pay an application fee of $25.
- Official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended*
- Conferred degree GPAs will be used for admission purposes. Applicants with a GPA below 2.5 in the conferred bachelor’s degree will be denied admission. Applicants with a conferred master’s degree with a 3.0 GPA and above will be accepted.
- U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
Waivers of any experience or certification requirements will be initiated by Lamar University Admissions staff as necessary in instances where they may not apply, such as applications from states that do not require certification for licensure.
Department of Teacher Education Admission Requirements
In addition to University admission requirements, the Department of Teacher Education requires the following for admission to the department program. Instructions for the department application and reference will be e-mailed to you after your ApplyTexas application is processed. Instructions for submitting the other documents will be e-mailed separately if you are accepted to the program.
- Department application with essay responses
- Teaching Certificate: Must have a valid state-issued teaching certificate upon enrolling in the program. ** This does not include a probationary or permit issued certificate.
- Teaching Experience: 3 years required
- Employment: In order to obtain Texas certification as an Educational Diagnostician, you must be employed on a TEA approved public or private school campus where you will obtain the required practicum hours for certification. To determine if your school is TEA approved, please use the following links: public school or private school.
- Mentor: Mentor needs to be an Educational Diagnostician or Special Education Director with access to an educational diagnostician test kit.
- Reference: Letter of reference from your principal
Many programs may lead to licensure or certification in other states, but additional coursework or other requirements may be required by your state. Please review this chart for guidance regarding whether a Lamar University program will meet educational requirements in your state. For additional questions, if considering any academic program that leads to professional licensure in a state outside of Texas, please contact our Out-of-State Licensure and Authorization Office.
Please note that out-of-state or out-of-country candidates cannot receive a Texas certification as an Educational Diagnostician.

Failure to disclose previous college attendance is justification for revocation of acceptance and dismissal from Lamar University.
