This 18-hour bridge program is designed for master's level graduates with degrees in counseling, psychology or related disciplines who want to pursue licensure as a professional counselor. This post-graduate online certificate provides the supplementary knowledge and experience needed to meet the 60-credit-hour academic requirements for the LPC exam in Texas and offers rigorous exam preparation.** A 3,000-hour internship is required post-exam to become licensed.

Instructed by award-winning counseling faculty, students will examine and explore advanced counseling topics including the professional roles and responsibilities of counselors, their relationships with clients, and their impact on behavioral healthcare systems as a whole. Students will learn to identify etiologies, diagnoses and treatment plans applying the most current research and meeting ethical and legal standards.

University Admission Requirements

  • Online Application & Fee: Complete online application and pay a one-time application fee of $25.
  • Transcripts: Official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended*
  • U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident

Official transcripts are sealed transcripts sent from the sending institution.

Applicants for Mental Health Counseling Certification must meet the following criteria:

  • 3.0 graduate GPA
  • Master's degree in counseling, psychology or related disciplines from a 48-credit-hour graduate program. Lamar graduates from a 36-credit-hour program may also apply; additional coursework is required.
  • Applicants with a master's degree in psychology must have 300 hours of practicum experience.
  • Two letters of recommendation submitted via the online application.
  • Statement of purpose submitted via the online application.

*All applicants must submit official, sealed transcripts from each institution attended to the Admissions Office. All degrees must be from a regionally accredited institution. Lamar University Office of Admissions will no longer require or college community college transcripts for graduate applicants. Official transcripts from all other institutions will be required. However, if a department or program wishes to review a community college transcript for decision purposes, the department or program may directly request the applicant to submit the official community college transcript(s) to the Office of Admissions for processing.

For students considering an academic program that leads to professional licensure in a state outside of Texas, such as Clinical Mental Health Counseling, School Counseling, Educational Diagnostician, Principal Certificate or Superintendent Certificate, please contact applicable licensure board(s) in any state you may want to pursue licensure prior to beginning the academic program in order to determine whether the program meets licensure requirements. It is the student’s responsibility to confirm program eligibility for licensure in any state outside of Texas.


Students are required to complete 18 hours of coursework in the Program Certificate in Mental Health Counseling online program.

CNDV 5302: Foundations of Clinical Mental Health (Counseling)

Duration: 5 weeks  |  Credit Hours: 3

This course focuses on the foundations of clinical mental health counseling. The course includes an exploration of the history, philosophy, trends, and practice of clinical mental health counseling; the roles and functions of clinical mental health counselors across practice settings; methods and models of clinical supervision; professional organizations, preparation standards, and credentials; and other related professional issues.

CNDV 5350: Abnormal Human Behavior

Duration: 5 weeks  |  Credit Hours: 3

A study of various symptom categories in psychopathology. The course will include an analysis of the diagnostic categories as well as the research concerning etiology and treatment. Prerequisites: Approval of instructor or 12 semester hours of CNDV coursework.

CNDV 5381: Marriage, Couple and Family Counseling

Duration: 15 weeks  |  Credit Hours: 3

An intensive exploration of the dynamics of marriage, couple, and family relationships. A critical analysis of various counseling techniques and approaches will be established. Development of counseling skills will be a primary emphasis.

CNDV 5326: Addictions Counseling

Duration: 5 weeks  |  Credit Hours: 3

This course provides counselors and other human service workers with an overview and etiology of the addictive process. Students will develop conceptual knowledge, practical skills, and assessment strategies including the use of wraparound assessment and intervention services within a behavioral health setting. Pre-requisites: Admission to the Lamar Counseling Program.

CNDV 5325: Advanced Ethics in Mental Health Counseling

Duration: 5 weeks  |  Credit Hours: 3

This course facilitates the application of ethics and legal codes for professional counseling and human service settings. Emphasis is placed on national and current state board rules, records management, coding and calling, and professional advocacy. Pre-requisite: Admission to the Lamar Counseling Program.

CNDV 5327: Psychopathology and Basic Psychopharmocology

Duration: 5 weeks  |  Credit Hours: 3

This course prepares mental health professionals in the basic diagnostic systems, research, and explanations of psychopathology and basic working knowledge for integrating psychopharmacology for effective coordinating of services in an integrated health model. Pre-requisites: Admission to the Lamar Counseling Program.

**This certificate program is not CACREP accredited. Students outside of Texas are responsible for conferring with their state board to ensure that this certificate program meets the core academic requirements for initial licensure as a professional counselor. All students are responsible for pursuing initial licensure through their state independently, upon completing the necessary coursework and all other state requirements.
