Earn a Program Certificate in Principal Education Online

For some classroom teachers, a natural next step is progressing to the position of building principal. However, even for those who have completed at least two years of teaching and a master’s degree program in an education field, the state of Texas requires completion of an approved principal educator program. In addition, future principals must pass the Texas Principal Assessment (268) and the Performance Assessment for School Leaders (PASL).

Preparing at Lamar University

School principals are responsible for staying abreast of best practices and strategies for student learning, stakeholder engagement, strategic planning, personnel management, and technological integration. Lamar University’s online Program Certificate in Principal Education is one of only 123 approved principal certification programs offered in the state of Texas, as of March 2021. By blending theoretical knowledge with hands-on leadership experience, this program offers students the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of educational policies, procedures, and legal statutes.

Lamar University’s Certification Program

It can take years to complete the principal certification process in Texas. The Program Certificate in Principal Education at Lamar University, however, offers an accelerated option that can be completed in as few as nine months. The program includes six online courses, each lasting approximately five weeks; if students stay on track, they can be ready to take the principal assessment exams in less than one year. If fast-tracking is not possible or desired, however, the courses can be completed at any pace, even while remaining in a full-time position.

Lamar University’s program includes courses in leadership, instructional improvement, school management, and human relations. Each course builds on generalized knowledge and gives students already employed in the field of education the opportunity to apply what they learn to their own district planning processes, turning universal issues into local solutions.

In addition, the program includes a five-week internship, giving future principals hands-on experiences with the benefit of administrator and faculty supervision. Interns face real-world problems to solve, in realms ranging from management issues to facilities operation, safety issues, and instructional improvement. Internships take place at accredited public or private schools to ensure prospective principals receive appropriate guidance, oversight and assistance throughout the entire learning process.
