Master of Education in Special Education Online

This online degree program is designed to prepare you to serve children across the spectrum of special education. This specialization track is specifically for teachers who want to add an additional specialization to their professional areas of teaching.
Program Overview
Lamar University's M.Ed. in Special Education online prepares you to design curricula and learning environments that nurture the abilities of special education students while helping them manage a range of learning difficulties and behavioral issues.
With a core curriculum based in research, assessment and content specific to the exceptional learner, you will understand how the needs and capabilities of these types of students differ from those developing normally and how best to guide them in their learning process. You will also learn how to assess and evaluate educational status and progress as well as strategies for curriculum modification and behavior management.
Lamar University's College of Education and Human Development is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).

Admissions
The Master of Education in Special Education online program has specific requirements that applicants must meet to enroll. Please read the admission guidelines to ensure you qualify.
Online Application
Submit your application and one-time $25 application fee online.
Teaching Certificate
Submit documentation of your valid, state-issued teaching certificate. Applicants must have at least two years of teaching experience.
Minimum 2.5 Undergraduate GPA
Applicants with a GPA below 2.5 in the institutional bachelor's will not be admitted.
University Admission Requirements
- Online Application & Fee: Complete online application and pay a one-time application fee of $25.
- Transcripts: Official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended*
- Teaching Certificate: Students must have a valid state-issued teaching certificate upon enrolling in the program.
- Teaching Experience: Applicants must have at least two years of teaching experience.
- U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
Waivers of any experience or certification requirements will be initiated by Lamar University Admissions staff as necessary in instances where they may not apply, such as applications from states that do not require certification for licensure.
Department of Teacher Education Admission Requirements
In addition to University admission requirements, the Department of Teacher Education requires the following for admission to the department program. Instructions for the department application and reference will be e-mailed to you after your ApplyTexas application is processed. Instructions for submitting the other documents will be e-mailed separately if you are accepted to the program.
- Department application with essay responses
- Teaching Certificate: Must be valid.** This does not include a probationary or permit issued certificate.
- Teaching Experience: Must have two years of teaching experience
- Employment: Employed on a TEA-approved public or private school campus.*** To determine if your school is TEA approved, please use the following links: public school or private school.
- Reference: Letter of reference from your principal

Lamar University Office of Admissions will no longer require community college transcripts for graduate applicants. Official transcripts from all other institutions will be required. Courses
Courses for the M.Ed. in Special Education online are designed to meet the educational requirements of the Council on Exceptional Children. This program does not provide eligibility for initial certification in special education. Participation in a specialization area may or may not lead to additional credentialing. It is the responsibility of the student to confirm the requirements for certification and/or endorsement in a specialization area.
