University Admission Requirements

  • Online Application & Fee: Complete online application and pay a one-time application fee of $25.
  • Transcripts: Official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended*
  • Teaching Certificate: Students must have a valid state-issued teaching certificate upon enrolling in the program.
  • Teaching Experience: Applicants must have at least two years of teaching experience.
  • U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident

Waivers of any experience or certification requirements will be initiated by Lamar University Admissions staff as necessary in instances where they may not apply, such as applications from states that do not require certification for licensure.

Out of state students should check with their state department of education to determine if there are specific state requirements needed.

Department of Educational Leadership Admission Requirements

The Department of Educational Leadership requires the following for admission to the department program. These requirements will be solicited from you at the time your Apply Texas application is uploaded to the Lamar University data system. You can determine right now if your place of employment is approved by TEA.

  • Teaching Certificate: Valid teaching certificate.** This does not include a probationary or permit issued certificate.
  • Teaching Experience: Two years teaching experience
  • Employment: Employed on a TEA-approved public or private school campus.*** To determine if your school is TEA approved, please use the following links: public school or private school.
  • Personal essay
  • Reference: Reference from your principal

Out-of-state applicants must determine whether the program will meet their state credentialing requirements by contacting their state’s Dept. of Education.

**Please note that out of state students may not be required to meet this criteria.

***Not applicable to out of state students unless taking the TExES Principal Exam.

Out of state students should check with their state department of education to determine if there are specific state requirements needed.

For students considering an academic program that leads to professional licensure in a state outside of Texas, such as Clinical Mental Health Counseling, School Counseling, Educational Diagnostician, Principal Certificate or Superintendent Certificate, please contact applicable licensure board(s) in any state you may want to pursue licensure prior to beginning the academic program in order to determine whether the program meets licensure requirements. It is the student’s responsibility to confirm program eligibility for licensure in any state outside of Texas.

Courses

Students are required to complete 36 hours of coursework as outlined in the degree plan. The Internship course (EDLD 5398) is the capstone course and requires that all other courses are successfully completed to enroll. Courses are offered on a rotational basis and not all courses are offered each session. EDLD 5311, 5302, 5303, and 5398 are offered every session.

The Texas Education Agency requires students in online programs who live and work out of state and who plan to apply for Texas Principal Certification to undergo review of teaching credentials by the Texas Education Agency. The cost to the candidate for this service is $180.00.

Note: Lamar University Graduate Education Programs do not permit students to take coursework for transient credit.

EDLD 5302: Concepts of Educational Technology

Duration: 5 weeks  |  Credit Hours: 3

The Concepts of Educational Technology emphasizes how Information and Communication Technology (ICT) can enhance the teaching and learning experience and enable students to acquire 21st century skills. (Microsoft TWT and MCE Exam).

EDLD 5303: Applying Educational Technology: Portfolio

Duration: 5 weeks  |  Credit Hours: 3

Evidence-based uses of educational technology in PK-12 schools. Emphasis on production of instructional materials using technologies, strengths and limitations of educational technology, articulation of personal philosophy of uses of technology in PK-12 and demonstrating evidences of technology in teaching and learning.

EDLD 5311: Fundamentals of Leadership

Duration: 5 weeks  |  Credit Hours: 3

A study of the relationships between and among human behavior, belief systems and administrative style.

EDLD 5314: Digital Learning in Local and Global Contexts**

Duration: 5 weeks  |  Credit Hours: 3

Provides opportunities to explore benefits of Information Communication Technologies (ICT) used in education and some of the best approaches in which innovative ICT practices have been used in education in local and global contexts.

EDLD 5315: Assessing Digital Learning and Instruction**

Duration: 5 weeks  |  Credit Hours: 3

Overcome the common misperception that abstract concepts such as learning are immeasurable. Using practical measurement solutions, professional educators learn to quantify and assess student-learning in digital learning environments.

EDLD 5316: Digital Citizenship

Duration: 5 weeks  |  Credit Hours: 3

This course examines the critical elements of digital citizenship; surveys contemporary legal issues; and explores rules, regulations, copyright, fair use, and intellectual property issues. Students will interact with multiple learning communities and build/strengthen their personal learning environments through a collection of resources, reflection and engagement, and creation of professional materials. The intended audience for this course is school administrators, prospective school administrators, IT personnel, practicing teacher, and other professionals who are interested in learning about digital citizenship, ethical and legal issues.

EDLD 5317: Resources for Digital Environments

Duration: 5 weeks  |  Credit Hours: 3

This course focuses on ongoing discussion and analysis of existing digital learning resources of many types (e.g., learning management systems, games, simulations, micro worlds, social media networks). As new digital resources are developed, digital leaders need to be able to understand and evaluate their practicality and value for educational use. This course allows students to explore new and changing technologies, applications and approaches.

EDLD 5318: Instructional Design in Online Learning **

Duration: 5 weeks  |  Credit Hours: 3

Learn the basics of creating effective instructional design for online courses using the “Understand by Design” framework. This course is a study of the principles of instruction design where designing instructional systems, processes in learning and instruction, delivery systems and evaluating instruction are considered.

EDLD 5333: Leadership for Accountability

Duration: 5 weeks  |  Credit Hours: 3

A study of short and long-range planning and problem solving techniques of effective school leaders. Special emphasis will be given to applications in an individual campus and the relationship to district planning processes.

EDLD 5339: The Principalship

Duration: 5 weeks  |  Credit Hours: 3

This course positions the school leader as the effective manager of the organization and its operations. Multiple topics are addressed such as: safe and effective learning environments, student support services, school policies and procedures, discipline management, behavior intervention, and fiscal issues in school management.

EDLD 5345: Human Resources Development

Duration: 5 weeks  |  Credit Hours: 3

Fundamentals of human relations and organizational behavior in developing programs of recruitment, selection, assignment, evaluation, promotion and termination of personnel.

EDLD 5352: Instructional Leadership

Duration: 5 weeks  |  Credit Hours: 3

Techniques of improving instruction through application of research on effective schools and models of instruction.

EDLD 5389: Developing Effective Professional Leadership**

Duration: 5 weeks  |  Credit Hours: 3

This course will focus on improving our learning environments and learner achievements by enabling educators to use the key principles of effective professional learning to move from the sit and get to the go and show model of professional learning. Prerequisites: EDLD 5302, EDLD 5303, EDLD 5304, EDLD 5305 & EDLD 5313 with a minimum grade of C in each.

EDLD 5398: Internship in Principal

Duration: 5 weeks  |  Credit Hours: 3

Designed to give the prospective principal job-related experience under the joint supervision of a school administrator and faculty of Lamar University. Management issues include: operations resources, facilities, and safety. Study of the instructional and administrative proficiencies necessary for effective schools. Should be the last course taken. May be repeated once for credit.
