Nursing Career Fairs Are Back!

A growing need for nurses has employers reviving nursing career fairs to fill vacancies with qualified candidates. Whether you are a nursing student, a new graduate or looking to change careers, a career fair can be useful in your job hunt. You can analyze and compare several companies simultaneously, reduce your waiting time in the application process and expedite the hiring process.

Make the Most of Career Fairs

The festive atmosphere of past nursing career fairs has transitioned from a focus on fun and giveaways to something more professional. Recruiters do more than promote their organization; they are also scrutinizing candidates. Whether you are attending a career fair in person or via the internet, consider a career fair like you would a job interview. You are seeking a well-paying job and not just a free pen. Be sure you do not ruin your chances before you begin by showing up unprepared.

Invest time in preparation: Maximize your time and energy by planning for the event. Review the employers scheduled to attend and research the ones you are interested in to prioritize your time.

  • Prepare your resume and have someone critique it. Compile paperwork that may be required such as copies of your nursing license, transcripts, references and multiple copies of your resume. Additional supplies you could bring include pen and paper, hand sanitizer, and a bottle of water.
  • Practice your answers to common interview questions and a short pitch about why you are the ideal candidate for the job. Develop questions that are appropriate for the organization and helpful in making your employment decisions.
  • If your event is a virtual career fair, test the settings on your computer, microphone and camera.
  • Dress conservatively and wear comfortable shoes. Help recruiters remember you by wearing a nametag.

What to expect: First impressions count, so be mindful of your body language. Even when you are not talking to a recruiter, they might be observing you. Be professional and conduct yourself as if you are at an interview — because in many ways, you are.

  • Arrive early, smile, make eye contact, network with other applicants and lead with a firm handshake. If you are nervous, consider starting with an employer that is not your first choice to calm your nerves.
  • Check to see if additional organizations signed up after the original lineup was announced.
  • Try not to waste time waiting in line and instead visit tables with fewer applicants.
  • Ask questions about patient ratios, specialties you are interested in and orientation. Be prepared to tell them why they should hire you.
  • Take notes and gather contact information for each organization.
  • Be selective if you accept giveaway items. Bigger items are harder to carry and can result in difficulties locating your important paperwork.

What not to do at career fairs: It is crucial to maintain an air of professionalism, so avoid the following behaviors.

  • Bringing food or beverages other than water.
  • Fidgeting or chewing gum.
  • Asking specific questions about salary unless they are offering you the job.
  • Interrupting or monopolizing the recruiter’s time.
  • Tossing your resume on the table without talking to the recruiter.
  • Saying negative things about your employer.
  • Bringing your children or friends.

How to follow up: This step is often overlooked and could be key to being remembered in a sea of applicants. Send a brief thank-you note and recap your conversation.

  • Evaluate how your process went, and decide if you need to implement changes for future career fairs.
  • Build your network by connecting with employers and peers from the event on LinkedIn and other professional social media sites.
