5 Things to Know Before Going to Business School

There are many aspects of business school that people never consider. Before you apply to an online Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree program, here are five essential things to consider about business school.

1. Real-World Experience Counts

Unlike many other higher education programs, you will gain more from your MBA experience if you first obtain between two to five years of real-world job experience. While a bachelor’s degree in business prepares you for the basics of a master’s-level business program, it does not give you the real-world experience you need to contribute to the teams you will work with during graduate school.

2. Extracurricular Activities Are Important

Extracurricular activities can supplement the knowledge and skills you learn in the classroom. These experiences increase your knowledge of how the world works through exposure to people and unexpected opportunities. Once you enroll in an MBA program, let your previous experiences guide you; do not neglect learning experiences beyond the classroom. Join university-related clubs. Look into internships. Cultivate new knowledge and new experiences that can enhance your understanding of globalized workplaces.

3. Collaboration Is Key

Collaboration with other students in your program is an essential part of the MBA experience and will help you both during school and after graduation. This step requires you to engage with your classmates. In business school, you will have opportunities to network with other individuals, which can help you with challenging subject matter and can pay off when it’s time to look for work. But it is up to you to seize those opportunities. Take the time to get to know other students and what their strengths are; the important networking you do with your classmates may have a big impact on how successful you are at securing a job after school.

4. Do Not Overpay for Your Education

Ivy League and Top 20 schools may offer some prestige to their graduates, but the price tag is not always worth it. Besides the hardship of shouldering the exorbitant costs of these schools, it’s much more valuable to find a program that is the right fit for you. Online MBA programs offer accredited degrees for a fraction of the cost of their higher-tuition competitors and often fit better into students’ lifestyles and needs. Keep in mind the value of the money you’re spending on your education and remember that the time you put into it will equal the quality of what you get out of it.

5. Set Goals

As you enter an MBA program, have an idea where you want the degree to take you, and be prepared for some classes to be challenging. Ask for help when you need it and be open and adaptable. An MBA is a versatile degree with diverse subject matter. Some courses will come easily to you. Don’t get discouraged for those that don’t. Continue to participate, be engaged and collaborate with other students.

As you weigh your options regarding online MBA programs, keep these five considerations in mind. Prior real-world experience will benefit you and your classmates, and you should participate in activities beyond your studies. Be open to collaborating with your classmates and don’t be afraid to ask questions when needed.
